The photo that took four tries in Ubud

The wind kept stealing the shot before I was ready for it. Here's what three days in the Ubud rice terraces actually looked like, wind included.

Neké Akua in a red gown, fabric sweeping in the wind, on a flower-hung swing above Balinese rice terraces.

Four tries, one frame

I'd pictured the shot for months before I got there — dress mid-air on that swing, the terraces stacked green behind me, nobody else in frame. Ubud had other plans. Round one: a group tour crested the ridge right as the shutter went. Round two: the wind caught the fabric wrong and it looked more "caught in a fence" than "flying." Round three: my own fault, eyes closed.

By the fourth pass I stopped posing and just swung. That's the one that made it.

If you're chasing the same shot: go right after the tour buses clear out, around 4pm, and bring someone patient. The light's better then anyway — softer, more gold than white — and you'll have the terrace mostly to yourself for maybe twenty minutes. That's all you need.

Let’s Be Friends

Once a month I send the things that didn’t make it to the grid — the hotel I’d actually rebook, what I’m cooking on repeat, the one thing I bought and don’t regret.

No spam — just what I’m loving each month.
