The living room I've rearranged four times
What I bought once, what I returned, and what finally made a rental feel like mine.

What actually stuck
Version one was too matched — a whole set bought in one order, and it looked like a showroom nobody lived in. Version two overcorrected: too many textures, no single thing to rest your eyes on. By version three I'd figured out the actual rule, which is that a room needs one loud thing and everything else has to be quiet enough to let it be loud.
A room needs one loud thing. Everything else just has to let it be loud.
The velvet armchair is the loud thing now. Everything else — the ottoman, the wallpaper, the rug — got quieter once I stopped trying to make them all compete for the same attention. Four versions in, that's the whole trick.
